WELCOME !

This is the companion list to our August 1999, 20th century catalogue offering, which still remains in effect. Included with this list is a fine assortment of:

1) 19th CENTURY CATALOGUES

2) REFERENCE BOOKS

3) NUMISMATIC LITERATURE SALES

4) BOWERS RARE COIN REVIEWS

and perhaps the most interesting of all. . .

5) THE LARGEST OFFERING OF PRICES REALIZED EVER PRESENTED.

Recent activity as we end the 1990’s suggests tremendous strength in the older material. This is only natural, as the supply available to the interested numismatist dwindles. The facts confirm this as evidenced by our good friend George Kolbe’s recent announcement of selling over a million dollars worth of numismatic literature in less than a year! We heartily congratulate you, George; the honor is certainly well deserved.

The prices for early numismatic literature are still reasonable considering the relationship to the coin market. But, hey. ..coins have always been over-priced. Even Joseph Mickley thought that very thing in October of 1867 when his 1804 dollar sold for $750.

So, if you have the desire to learn about American numismatics, or if you wish to research a certain coin or series of coins, the way to get the information is to create a library with auction catalogues as a foundation. There are several ways to do this. A commentary can be found on page 16 about fixed price lists and mail bid sales.

As always, Jenny and I say “THANK YOU” for your interest; and we wish everyone “HAPPY HOLIDAYS” as we prepare for the exciting year of 2000!

Best wishes,

Karl & Jenny Moulton

CATALOGUES

These sales represent the core of American numismatics. The first coin auction of note was the Lewis Roper Sale in 1851. By the end of the 1850’s many collectors were active from Philadelphia to Boston. The big market was in Proof sets, thanks to a friendly mint director who was happy to oblige B any and all orders - including himself. These early collectors sold their duplicates, and acquired 1 missing pieces to help fill in their collections by bidding in auction sales, just like now.

Names like McCoy, Mickley, Cohen, Jenks, Stickney, Garrett, etc. are remembered today; and any coins accurately pedigreed are highly prized items indeed. Interestingly, the collector of this time did not focus on top quality type coins. His main interest was apt to be U.S. & World Medals, George Washington items, Early Copper, Tokens, Ancients, and Colonials.

Dealers like Ed Cogan. W.E. Woodward, William Strobridge, A.B. Sage, Ebenezer Mason, John Haseltine, Ed Frossard, Sigismund Harzfeld, the Chapman brothers, H.P. Smith, H.G. Sampson, David Proskey, George Massamore, and Charles Steigerwalt all presented many fine auction sales. At times there were more than 60 combined sales by the dealers listed above in a single year. That’s more than one sale per week! Public disputes such as Cogan vs Mason, Frossard vs Woodward, Harzfeld vs the U.S. Mint, and virtually everyone vs the Chapman’s cataloguing the Bushnell sale, all added spicy ingredients to the marketplace. It was truly an interesting time in American numismatics.

The record price for any 19th century catalogue is $9,500. That was the price paid last June for Charles Bushnell’s priced and named Lewis Roper sale. Since auction catalogues represent the base reference for any numismatic research, the very limited supply will dictate an increased value and desirability as time goes on.

We offer the finest selection of 19th century sales available in the country today at fixed prices. Check the listings carefully and favor us with your choices.

Collecting these early sales is challenging, but not really expensive. It’s an exciting adventure trying to complete a set from any one of these pioneer dealers. This writer has been enjoying this form of bibliomania for years now. \

The following selection provides you with an opportunity to choose a 100+ year old coin sale at a price that will seem reasonable, if not downright cheap, as we head into the 21st century. You, too, can join in the fun. We will be happy to offer opinions, insights, and answers to any questions that come our way.

All catalogues are in very good to fine condition. Notable defects are described. Due to their age and the quality of paper used, all are quite fragile. HWP indicates Hand-Written Prices. Check our Prices Realized Lists Available section to purchase PR’s when available.

This sale contained the only circulated example of an 1827/3 quarter. Mr. White had owned this coin before 1867 as verified in a letter written by cataloguer Ed Cogan. The apparent buyer of this coin was Nicholas Petry. When the sale of his collection took place in May of 1893, the Chapman brothers failed to make note of this pedigree. Instead, the Chapman's created a misleading story about

the piece being found in circulation. The coin was purchased by Virgil Brand at the Petry sale. It remained in his collection until his death in 1926. In October of 1937 a probate judge divided the Brand collection in half between his two younger brothers, Horace and Armm. Armin consigned the com to Wayte Raymond and it appeared in the December 21, 1937, J.C. Morganthau sale #384 as lot #175. Louis Eliasberg bought this coin and it remained in his collection until the Eliasberg Collection sale in April of 1997 by Bowers &

Merena. The Clapp family never owned this piece. This is the first accurate pedigree about this particular coin to appear

in print 50.

Fixed Price List or Mail Bid Sale WHicli is Better ?

by Karl Moulton

Presently, there are no periodical printed price guides for numismatic literature. We can only judge the market by prices realized at auction because today this is how most literature changes hands.

We have been one of the very few literature dealers to issue regular fixed price lists over the years. Why? There are several reasons:

1) We have a large inventory in stock (over 10,000 items).

2) We have the largest selection of Prices Realized lists in the country.

3) We offer the best prices.

SO, LET’S TALK PRICES

It’s a well-known fact that a single item being offered at auction usually brings more than what it is worth. This is because of “auction fever” at a public auction. But what about mail bid sales?

There is no direct competition, yet many times we see very high bids on seemingly common material.

This is due partly to the cataloguer placing estimates for each lot and then not accepting any bids less than 50% of that estimate. To put it another way the mail bid sales are, in effect, minimum fixed price lists. So watch out, you could get railroaded.

Here are a few recent examples from one mid-western literature dealer. Keep in mind the buyer has to pay a 10% buyer’s fee, plus a $2.00 per lot “processing fee”.

In this sale are found the following:

Lot #138 - a S.J. Kabealo catalogue, April 29, 1962, at $55. If you are lucky and get it for Vi

the estimate, it would still total over $30. We have one at $4.

Lot #142 - A Katen catalogue, March 18, 1948 at $35. We price it at $8.

Lot #190 - Pinetree, April 28, 1975 at $35. We have them at $6.

Lot #197 - Ponterio, June 23, 1981 at $35. We price it at $6.

and here’s a real interesting; one:

Lot #320 - Washington Coin Exchange, March 4, 1967 estimated at $70. To win the lot in this

sale, the minimum cost to the buyer would be over $40. We have one at $4! That’s a 10 to 1

ratio on the price of a single catalogue in the same time frame.

Estimates are fine if they are realistic, but the practice of not accepting bids of less than 50% of the cataloguer’s estimate is questionable to this writer. If they want a minimum or opening bid, then it should be stated and listed as such. I urge discussion among other literature dealers and collectors to address this practice to determine whether it is beneficial or should be reworded.

As with coins, there seems to be no end in sight for the 10-15% “buyer’s fee”, but just remember - with a fixed price list offering such as this one, there are no extra “buyer’s fees” involved.

Comments are welcome. Thank you.
